Deerhunter Is an American four-piece indie rock group originating from Atlanta, Georgia. The band, consisting of Bradford Cox, Moses Archuleta, Josh Fauver, and Lockett Pundt, have described themselves as "ambient punk," though they incorporate a wide range of genres, including noise rock, art rock, shoegaze, post-punk, and psychedelia.
Their first release came in 2005 with Turn it up Faggot which was largely influenced by the death of Justin Bosworth, their ex-bassist who died of complications from a skateboarding accident. Cox has been quoted as saying that the recordings were the result of a lot of negativity after Bosworths death. The album wasn’t a commercial success but nevertheless was a stepping stone for Deerhunter with Cox later stating that the band never wanted to record another Turn it up Faggot again.
2006 saw a new start for the band with the inclusion of Lockett Pundt as a replacement for Bosworth, bringing with him his reverb-saturated guitar sound, the start of a more uplifting less broody sound for the band, and the release of their first critically acclaimed album Cryptograms. They carried through this momentum with 2008’s follow-up Microcastle and onto their latest release, 2010’s Halycon Digest, with Pitchfork music rating these albums 8.2,9.2 and 9.2 respectively. They’re a band starting to make a lot of noise from a artistic perspective which surely paves the way for the commercial success due to them. Big things are headed Deerhunters way in 2011 as they continue a large scale touring schedule where they continue do things the Deerhunter way; through grace, complexity and artistic integrity.
