Rage Against the Machine (RATM) are a rap metal or Nu Metal band formed out of Los Angeles, California in 1991. They consist of vocalist Zack de la Rocha, bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk on drums and Tom Morello as lead guitarist. RATM are fierce political activists with their songs revolving around government oppression, cultural imperialism, and corporate America. Their sound incorporates elements of rap, hip hop, punk, thrash, funk and punk to name a few but is primarily characterized by de la Rocha’s fierce vocals over floor shattering, knuckle busting, riffs.
With the release of their self titled debut in 1992, RATM were an instant success with their album going double platinum, and the single Killing in the Name ofgetting radio play all over the US. They followed this up with Evil Empire in 1996, which went triple platinum and earnt them guest appearances on talk shows across the US. The album was ranked number 1 in the billboard 200 of that year and continues to stand out amongst albums of the time. After the release of an equally successful third album the band split up citing a clash of artistic input as the reason. However in recent years, much to the ecstasy of any hard music lover across the globe, they reformed and have been doing shows all over the world. Currently the band has sold over 16 million albums worldwide.
