Queen are a British rock band formed in 1971 London , originally consisting of Freddie Mercury, (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). Despite their earlier releases being more progressive rock, the mid 70’s saw Queen begin incorporating more mainstream elements into their music, which in turn brought them greater commercial success. Vocal harmonies became a prominent part of their music as well as vocally tracking their voices to make it sound like they were supported by large choirs. Their musical style became more expansive incorporating elements of heavy metal, glam rock, vaudeville, pop rock, dance/disco, opera and electronica to name a few. Front man Freddie had a real tongue in cheek attitude, with audience participation kept in mind during many songs such as hits, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. With the newly acquired commercial success of the back of 1974’s Sheer Heart Attack, Queen continued to experiment with various musical styles, and over the next 14 years released another 8 albums. The band was a massive success in both Europe and America and Freddie was idolised across the globe. Their prominence in day to day life was apparent for all to see with participation in Live Aid in 1985, and their works constantly used in marketing campaigns, they were easily one of the biggest bands in the world. However in 1988 fans began to notice Freddie’s gaunt appearance and rumours began to sweep that he was ill. Freddie completely denied the rumours insisting that his appearance and refusal to do interviews was just down to exhaustion from touring. The band pressed on, releasing Miracles in 1988and Innuendo in 1991 before Freddie was rushed to hospitalone night. On the 23rd of November 1991 an official statement read that Freddie’s HIV status had progressed to AIDS and he was dead within 24hrs due to bronchial pneumonia.Queens place in history is undeniable with songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody the 3 highest selling single of all time behind two charity driven singles, and hits such as We Will Rock You and We are the Champions still common sporting anthems across the globe. Countless bands have listed them as influences and you can be sure that the spirit of Queen will live on for many years to come.
