Your Guide to Getting Publicity So I said in last week’s column about how doing little pub gigs are great for publicity. Which they are, and I hope all my band readers went out and performed super mega shows this past week. But this week I’m gonna expand on the theme of publicity a bit this week.
Publicity = Necessary. How do we get it? Yes, performing to the public whenever we can, but that’s not all. You’re forgetting how you’re reading these words right now. Yes, the internet! This new internet thing, great source of info. If someone sees you on stage doing one of your AMAZING performances like I told you to, they’ll google your band’s name. Make sure they go to a site that says you’re awesome. A page on a host that people are familiar with, MySpace and Facebook are good for this. You could also make your own Wikipedia page.
And of course, while mentioning internet publicity, I just have to say that if you just email this site (firstname.lastname@example.org) with your details, some photos, videos or recordings, heaps of people will see it. Because this site is, of course, awesome.
Ok, so some other ideas I’ve seen that I’ve liked. Make your own flyers for your next performances and go out to shopping centres and personally hand them out, it’s even better if you’re doing a charity event, cause people like good people. Also, if you have a few homemade recordings, or proper recordings, of you guys playing, take an iPod with that on it with you and when you give out the flyers just give people an example of what they might hear if they come see you.
But be creative. Whatever you can think of to get your name out, do it! Because the more people who know you exist the better. oh and So get out there and spread your word!
